Worldsensing provides Fastprk 2 smart parking data to “hackers”

The University Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) hosted the third edition of the Hackathon Mobility BCN, organized by CARNET, Cooperative Automotive Research Network, the open hub for industrial and academic partners from the areas of automotive and mobility research & innovation initiated by SEAT, Volkswagen Group Research and UPC.
While this year’s event encouraged hackers to focus on the future of urban mobility and autonomous driving and connected cars, the hackathon offered students to take part in one of three challenges to improve mobility in cities. As one of the local companies supporting the hackathon, Worldsensing provided real-world parking management data from its innovation project Fastprk2 and asked participants to create a dashboard helping end-users like parking operators make better and faster, data-driven decisions.
48 Hours to Hack
Participants gathered over a period of four days and a total of 48 hours to find solutions for:
- Social Mobility: waking up the machines – how to use data and smart technologies to make mobility concepts more socially sustainable.
- AI for Mobility and the Driving Experience – how to improve mobility through Artifical Intelligence (AI) and by using Cozmo, an AI toy robot.
- Visualizing Mobility – how to empower people to identify and analyze patterns of mobility usage in cities in order to create and improve mobility services.
The most compelling proposal within each category was awarded with 2,ooo€, the second best with 500€.
Additional training for Hackers
Throughout the hackathon, participants also received training by companies supporting the event, such as the Barcelona City Council, on big data, AI and open data, among others. The annual hackathon is supported by the Barcelona City Council, Barcelona School of Informatics (FIB), Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB), TelecomBCN of the UPC, CIT UPC, Sparcity, Som Mobilitat, OuiShare and Worldsensing.
In 2016, Worldsensing was granted funding by the European Commission for Fastprk2, an initiative to develop the next-generation of parking detection systems equipped with Intelligent Transport Services (ITS) for cities and citizens, all merged in a single mobility platform. The sensors will combine both magnetic and infrared detection technologies and will pioneer the use of deep learning methodologies to increases data accuracy to almost 100%.
