Worldsensing presents Fastprk2: the future technology for on-street smart parking. The project aims to introduce a next-generation parking detection system enriched with advanced services for cities and citizens on an improved mobility platform.
The overall goal is to improve the current commercial version of the Fastprk product by implementing a complete and innovative end-to-end on-street parking management system.
Fastprk2 is based on Fastprk sensors, networks, and services. The system is currently one of the most competitive solutions for on-street smart parking.
Previous projects and implementations have not only demonstrated the reliability of the smart parking technology, but also the potential of Fastprk. Cities using the system have reduced traffic flow by up to 18% in the city centre while also decreasing parking infringement by 55% and by increasing parking use and occupancy that generates additional revenue per parking space.
The Fastprk2 project is an integral part of the “SMEInst-10-2016-2017: Small business innovation research for Transport and Smart Cities Mobility” topic within the SME-Instrument program and addresses several issues related to improving the efficiency, flexibility, safety and sustainability of todays mobility systems in urban environments.
The innovative, full-featured Fastprk2 smart on-street parking solution includes almost 100% accurate occupancy sensors. It consists of flush or surface mounted devices which run on batteries. The devices communicate occupancy data of parking spaces by means of a proprietary high range, low consumption wireless sensor network to a central management server.
The most notable innovations about Fastprk2 are a specialized software for Big Data Analytics and Business Intelligence, a new infrastructure to create a more comprehensive Quality of Experience model and providing a solid basis for future improvements, such as Artificial Intelligence algorithms for automatic recommendation and predictive applications.
The FastPrk2 project will help improve Fastprk’s current sensors, system and services within the next 2 years:
Concept 1 – Parking space sensor (detection) TRL 6
Sensors: Increase current parking sensors accuracy up to almost 100%, integrate vehicle/user identification solutions (RFID, Bluetooth, etc.), reduce of internal maintenance costs by 20% (reduction of sensor calibration effort), increase product life (currently limited by batteries) to more than 10 years and reduce energy consumption by 30% through energy-efficient communication protocols.
Concept 2 – Parking management platform (data integration and elaboration) TRL 6
System: Improve system robustness, reliability, availability, scalability, compatibility/connectivity by means of specific system design, selection of components and development of specific tools like self-checking and new APIs (Application Programming Interface), minimize installation by means of design strategies and updated procedures; minimize maintenance costs by means of preventive/predictive maintenance. Finally, data security, anonymity and encryption systems for automatic enforcement and billing procedures will be implemented.
Concept 3 – Transport services and BI tools (analysis and visualization) TRL 6
Services: Extension of current implemented data processing and Business Intelligence for real-time fraud prevention and automatic parking enforcement, variable pricing and automatic billing, occupancy forecast and recommendation, parking spot guidance and reservation, enhanced accuracy for occupancy detection (crossed sensors measurements), and user experience (UX) and combination of these services with real time traffic information provided by the actual platform. A final set of mobility and parking services will be implemented within the scope of this project.
